BIG 5 FRIDAY: Glamping, Best Self Journal, Oven Sauce and More

It’s Big 5 Friday, my quick list of things that improved my week. What I’m listening to, reading, eating, thinking about, anything really. Anything that can make your week better, too.

When I was working as a marketer, a boss insisted on a weekly “Big 5” list. My top priorities for the week. I hated the Big 5. Dreaded handing it in. But the idea stuck, and I’ve used the Big 5 many times since: to manage my priorities as a business owner, to keep my staff focused at Homeroom, even for chores home. (1) DREAM VACATION: CAMPING IN MEXICO
This has been my dream vacation since… well, May, when Alejandro sent it to me. Every time I’m having a bad day or even a bad moment, I open this link and imagine waking up on the beach, with the morning sun pouring into my tent. I have to do this. Soon.

(2) MY FAVORITE GOAL-SETTING JOURNAL: SELF JOURNAL BY BEST SELF CO.
I’ve tried Evernote. Todoist. Workflow. Reminders. I work best when I physically write things down. The Best Self Journal is the best planner, goal-setter, organizer, gratitude journal that I’ve found. I have it by my side all day and all night. I can plan out my day, be reminded of my over-arching goals, write lists and ideas, read some inspirational quotes, all that good stuff. (3) A GREAT WAY TO TAKE BETTER iPHONE PHOTOS: BITPLAY SNAP! CASE
I’m always trying to dig my phone out of my pocket or my bag, and by the time I find it, my boys have stopped smiling, the coyote ran off the trail, the perfect moment is gone. This case has a strap, a cool grip, and even some lenses. You’ll love it!

(4) BEST INSTAGRAM RECIPE: OVEN SAUCE BY DASH AND BELLA
I make a version of this sauce about once a week during the summer. Just slice cherry tomatoes in half and roast cut-side up on about 400F. Add olive oil, sliced garlic, salt, pepper and some white wine. Cook for about 20 minutes and pour over pasta or toasted bread.

(5) WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: JAMES ALTUCHER INTERVIEWS RYAN HOLIDAY
I love listening to the James Altucher Show. This guy has been down and out so many times in his life (and he talks about it again and again and again), but still, I’m drawn to it every time. Ryan and James talk about how to create something people are drawn to, not just for the moment, but for the long haul (think Avatar vs Star Wars). They discuss the myth of competition, the value of being persistent, and how to make your project so personal, only you can do it. Great conversation!
