It’s Big 5 Friday, my quick list of things that improved my week. What I’m listening to, reading, eating, thinking about, anything really. Anything that can make your week better, too.
When I was working as a marketer, a boss insisted on a weekly “Big 5” list. My top priorities for the week. I hated the Big 5. Dreaded handing it in. But the idea stuck, and I’ve used the Big 5 many times since: to manage my priorities as a business owner, to keep my staff focused at Homeroom, even for chores home. (1) LEARNING A LANGUAGE: NEWS IN SLOW SPANISH PODCAST
Holy shit, this is awesome! Even if you’re not trying to learn Spanish, you gotta give this listen. The number of times you hear “Trump” and “loco” and “increíble” is freakin hilarious. And, it really does help you learn Spanish! Because, well, they talk really slow.
(2) WHAT I’M READING: ALL EXTREMELY CONFIDENT PEOPLE GIVE UP THESE 13 HABITS
“People who are confident don’t need anyone else to see their poise, because they don’t care. They know which direction is north and they trust in their ability to navigate.” Doesn’t that sound great? Gives me something to aspire to. Published on INC.com, by Matthew Jones. (3) MY FAVORITE NEW PLAYLIST: ESSENTIAL MOTIVATION
Because everyone needs a playlist with Journey, Lady Gaga, Eminem and Arcade Fire. This is 6 hours of pure happiness. Oh, and Flashdance! C’mon, don’t you want to rock out to Flashdance on your next run?
(4) COOKBOOK I WISH I’D COOK FROM: CLEAN SOUPS BY REBECCA KATZ
Such a beautiful, thoughtful cookbook with recipes that warm my soul and clean my arteries just by looking at them. One day, I’ll have the drive to make her miracle broth. But for now, I’m just gonna look at the pretty pictures.
(5) MY FAVORITE RUNNING PANTS: ATHLETA BE FREE KNICKER
I have tried many, many, many running pants and shorts. These are my top choice for two reasons: pockets and material. You can fit your phone and keys in the low profile pockets, and the material is so breathable, so lightweight, so when you run, they don’t creep down your butt forcing you to awkwardly yank them up when you’re sweaty, sticky and dirty. Uck, I hate that.
